“The whole world is a circus if you look at it the right way… Every time you pick up a handful of dust and see not the dust but a mystery, a marvel there in your hand. Every time you stop to think ‘I’m alive! and being alive is fantastic!’ “ —James Christian Philosophy: An Introduction to the Art of Wondering

One of the biggest trends this year is a shift from light and breezy romantic themes to more moody and saturated designs. Colors like aubergine and burgundy really inspired me to create this gothic circus look.

I found an incredible venue in-between Pala and Temecula that has the most amazing barn and vintage truck. Whispering Oaks Terrace is an absolute gem. Their large property hosts many different style areas that are perfect for any couple. Especially for rustic romantic like this shoot.

I wanted to focus a lot on dark colors and inauthentic lighting. So with the incredible help of Sterling Productions, we blocked out the natural light in Whispering Oaks Terrace’s barn and used different techniques to bring in that Gothic feel. Mark Davies really knows his stuff! We also used heavy velour draping from Allies Party Rentals to help tie in texture and depth.

I was also very lucky to work Amanda Dugan of Oh Lovely Wedding Photography. Her contemporary style was a perfect fit. When I asked her about her inspiration for this shoot, she said “I approached this knowing it was going to be a very moody and dark theme. There was very little natural light to work with so bringing out all the lighting elements that were brought in needed to be felt and seen and was crucial to making this all look and feel right.”

The most perfect specialty rentals were provided by Adore Folklore. Their shabby chic collection of vintage furniture and tableware was everything I was looking for. It also accented the gypsy look I wanted for the tablescape. When in doubt, mismatch-it-out!

The gorgeous linens were provided by Creative Coverings. We layered a sequin overlay on top of their sangria palazzo round and scalloped the edges to make a more luxurious feel. I live Creative Coverings’ vast inventory of specialty linens. They literally had everything I wanted for this shoot.

I really wanted to showcase some different elements in this shoot, so Shelby Creative Designs helped make the amazing paper goods. We went with a subtle nod to the showman life by having our “couple” be named Annie And Frank after Annie Oakley and Frank Butler. She spent a lot of time creating the perfect match in color and font for the vintage circus look.

And what circus isn’t complete without sweets! Our confectionery fare was provided by Karen Anderson of The Sweet Apron. She knocked it out the park with this 3-tiered red velvet cake. She came up with this incredible design of mixing lace airbrushing, brushed fondant stripes, and black roses to continue the Gothic look throughout the entire shoot. Might I also add, it was quite delicious.

And last but not least, we must talk about our ring leaders themselves: the bride and groom! Our bride wore a custom gown from D’Angelo’s Couture Bridal. A strapless ivory gown with striped lace and the most incredible bespoke choker! Every piece of jewelry was also handmade from D’Angelos. The grooms suit was another play on texture with a mismatched tuxedo of black velvet and burgundy linen. They hair and makeup was done by the incredible Faces by Frances. Her smoky eye and vintage hair is so amazingly captivating! I was obsessed. And what bride wouldn’t be complete without a bouquet. Callie of Wyld Blooms rocked this amazing pomander bouquet. She was inspired by the vintage marionettes found at carnivals and really wanted something more unique for this look. She incorporated some Russian folk-art ribbon and some luxurious feathers to help add to the play on texture. This bouquet really shined.
